The Journey of Parenthood: Amy Robach’s Heartfelt Reflections
Amy Robach recently shared her thoughts on the intimate topic of potentially expanding her family with partner T.J. Holmes. This conversation comes on the heels of her courageous journey through breast cancer and her recovery. As a mother of two daughters—Ava, 22, and Annalise, 19—whom she shares with her ex-husband, Tim McIntosh, Amy has reflected deeply on what motherhood means to her. Meanwhile, T.J., a dedicated father to his children, Jaiden and Sabine, also expressed his thoughts on the matter during their podcast, "Amy & T.J. "
"Lately, we’ve been having more discussions about the idea of growing our family, particularly through adoption. Interestingly, I often find myself bringing up the subject," T.J. noted during their talk. However, in a candid interview with Parade, Amy clarified their current stance, revealing that while they have touched on this topic, they do not plan to actively pursue having more children.
"We mentioned it on the podcast, but we haven't explored it further, nor do we intend to. It’s one of those things where, when you find someone you want to share your life with, the desire for more children can is a natural feeling. But at our age, and considering what we are capable of, we have to be realistic," she explained.
Amy articulated a universal longing when she stated, "You yearn to experience the joys of parenting with someone special, to share life's most profound moments together. Yet, acknowledging that this may no longer be an option can be emotionally challenging." She added, “I feel fortunate to have had my children at a relatively young age, especially living in New York City where the norms can be quite different.”
Amy’s journey with breast cancer, which she bravely shared with the world during a live mammogram for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 2013, took a significant toll on her ability to have more children. Diagnosed with stage two invasive breast cancer at just 40, she quickly started her treatment, which unintentionally thrust her into early menopause, effectively closing the door on her hopes for additional biological children. “I am grateful to have welcomed my last child at the age of 32. Had I postponed that, the outcome could have been dramatically different," she reflected.
Despite the challenges, Amy finds joy in the beautiful blended family she has with T.J. "On our podcast, we discussed what it might have been like to have more children, how that experience would have been remarkable. However, we already have three wonderful daughters who share our lives, celebrate holidays with us, and fill our home with delight,” said the 52-year-old. "While my girls are already grown and living independently, T.J.’s youngest, Sabine, 12, often spends time with us. Her presence truly brings excitement to our household."
Amy continued, "It’s such a joy to have a 12-year-old around, and we often discuss the 'what ifs' and 'if onlys' of parenting a child together. It’s a heartfelt topic but rich with emotional complexities."
A Shared Beginning
Amy and T.J. first crossed paths in 2014 when he joined ABC News. Their professional collaboration blossomed when they co-hosted "GMA3: What You Need to Know" in September 2020. Their relationship took a romantic turn, becoming public in January 2023, leading them to part ways with the show shortly after.
